General

Our Society was an informal online initiative during 2011 to help people share ideas about local action. This ideas platform was one activity.

I suggest we ...

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

  1. bring people together around stories

The big society is just a label under which the government is try to tell stories. We need to claim, own, shape and tell better stories and with the power of those stories, create new stories. The "Big Society" is a meta-narrative, a story about stories. We need our own meta-narrative that is a new lense through which people can really understand what we're all trying to do. Having understood this, people will become empowered through stories to tell stories of their own.

    • Find ways to hear and share the stories of the 'forgotten society'

As well as valuing the community activity that's already happening, we should make Our Society a place that shares the stories of people who are marginalised or feel excluded. We can do this by working with local groups, holding workshops or events that record these stories.

      • Build a humungous aggregator of all the positive good that millions of people have done today

The tiny, but not so insignificant acts of kindness and philanthropy, which if joined together would add up to one heck of a powerful narrative for 'our society'. Bad news happens fast and travels fast, while a good story can take much longer to blossom and bear fruit. Where are the stories of the courageous people who through their own efforts, or with a little leg up, overcome what is holding them back to create a brighter tomorrow for themselves and their communities, one person at a time.

        • Write a semi-fictional of how public services, voluntary action, social enterprises, community group

This could provide a starting point for some real stories about the complexity of developing collaboration at local level - and what's needed for the future

          • aggregate the big society conversations into one place so we can see the arguments

There are so many networks, bloggers and media outlets writing about this topic, that perhaps we need an aggregation and/or visualisation of the different arguments so we can follow and add to them. Map the arguments, aggregate the conversations, bring it all together.

            • Expand Our Society - and offer other online spaces - for people's stories

The best way to share ideas and inspiration is to tell stories of what's worked and what hasn't, in people own words, and their own way.

              • Support community and social reporters

Community reporters use a mix of media to tell stories in a locality, and help others find their voice. Social reporters may do that and also work across networks to make sense, join up conversations, and help others use social media

                • Hold events where people can share their views by creating a 'book in 8 minutes'

A 'book in 8 minutes' (see http://scr.bi/eMiv3O ) is a way of enabling people to share their reflections on a particular topic. It's a creative way for people to express themselves and share their thoughts with a wider audience.
