invest in boring but necessary services that make a sustained difference from day to day
There are loads of great new ideas for things we could do. But there are also many things that work - but that suffer from short-term funding. Finding out what those services are in our local areas and investing time, money and effort in supporting them turn out to be one of the most effective routes to positive social return.
Appreciative enquiry is an excellent technique and at the moment, many people are doing this in their heads disconnected from each other, although think in some organisations this is happening to an extent, perhaps not systematically.or evaluated.

(Put in slightly as a devils advocate point, but in a more positive light to suggest that we should be looking to build on processes of appreciative enquiry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appreciative_inquiry - as opposed to starting from the point of seeking problems in need of innovation)
